Rose Cutting
Proper Rose Cutting Tips and Techniques
Summary: Rose cutting and propagation require steady hands, proper care, right soil, and patience in order for your rose plants to flourish. The best time to do the cuttings would be the colder months when the rose goes through a dormant state.
If you want to propagate your roses, you can employ different rose cutting techniques to get the best outcome of your endeavor. Here are some tips to guide you on cutting your roses.
One effective rose cutting tip is to identify the time of the year when it is best to do this process for the most optimum results. You can do your cutting at anytime of the year but the best would be the fall or the chillier months between November and mid February. The rationale for this is the fact that roses go through dormancy period at these times and cutting is more successful if done during this period.
The most ideal part of the plant for rose cutting is the part of the rose that has flowered recently. Usually this area is located at the stem tips. You will notice that this area may have wilted flowers or hips growing. These should be cut all the way to the first good leaves. You will need a trusty pair of sharp garden shears that are angled at forty-five degrees. You need to cut at least six to eight inches from the rose stem.
Your next step in proper rose cutting is to put the cut part into a clean water bag and place it in cool storage. You can use a styro-cooler filled with ice in order to prevent the rose cutting from drying out. You can store the cutting for several days at a time.
The next tip involves the use of rooting hormones, which are powdery substances available in garden stores and used widely by professional rose growers. Alternatively, you can also utilize cut branches of willows that are about an inch big. You need to soak these overnight in rainwater to let them steep. They would look like a form of tea when they’re ready. Remove the cut branches and soak the specimens for at least a few hours or so. Research suggests that by doing this process you improve the chances of the cane rooting and it also prevents the cut plant from drying out and losing its moisture.
The next step is to determine the location where you need to plant your specimens. The best site would get adequate sun exposure in the morning with a fair amount of shade in the afternoon. Choose a location that has adequate drainage and soil that is sandy. An area in your home where the water drips from the roof is an example of an ideal location.
When you have planted your rose cutting specimens, you need to take proper care in order for them to not lose their moisture. If the area you live in does not have a lot of rainfall you may want to do some watering at least every other day. If you live in a colder region you may want to put some coverings to protect the plant from damage. During the first months after rooting your cuttings you can expect the development of tissue from where new roots will sprout. This period is very sensitive and may determine the survival of your plant or its immediate demise if proper care is not taken.

Growing Rose
Tips for Growing Rose in a Pot
Summary: Almost anyone who has created a garden will have a rose growing in some corner of it. Sometimes, the easiest method is growing rose in a container or pot.
Growing rose is something that every gardener has done. These hardy beauties brighten up any garden and can survive almost all weather and soil types. There are more than a 100 varieties of roses in the world. They can be in the form of shrubs, bushes, creepers, small trees, etc. They are survivors and there are varieties that can survive in almost all types of soil.
In today’s space-crunched world, it has become quite expensive to own a large garden. Most housing types now are apartments and condos. The only option for such dwellers is to grow plants in containers and pots. Growing rose is just as easy in a container or pot as it is in the direct soil. Due to it being in a pot, there are many advantages. One can move the roses to any part of the garden without any problem. If for some reason one is shifting residence, they are easy to transport. Transferring a plant from the soil and then replanting it in a new area can shock and kill it. This is easily prevented by growing plants in pots.
Those living in apartments can easily grow roses in containers and pots. Due to their hardy nature, roses are excellent plants to start your own balcony garden. The type of container used for growing rose can depend on various things. Pots come in different materials and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is always ideal to use colored plastic pots, as they are cheap and come in various colors. Other materials used in pots are metal, which may rust or react with the soil; terra cotta, which is quiet heavy, dries out quickly, and might break; and wood, which will rot very fast. The size is just as important. Rose varieties that grow up to be less than 4 feet tall need a container that is at least 14-16 inches in diameter and length. For varieties that grow up to be 5 feet and above, the container should have a 16-18 inch depth.
Once the pot has been chosen, it is important to ensure good drainage. Ensure that the hole is relatively clear of obstructions. When planting, fill soil and potting mix around the roots, pressing gently as you go. Ensure the final soil level is only 2 inches from the pot rim. Any higher, the soil might get washed away. After planting, water it thoroughly. Remember that soil will settle after you water it, so maintain the soil level. Ensure you work near the chosen location, as the pots in which you are growing rose will get heavier with soil in them.
Use mulch to insulate the plant roots from extreme weather. Because roses in a pot do not get access to direct soil, they require double the normal watering and fertilizing. Avoid pouring water directly. Instead sprinkle the water on the plant. Regular pruning of your roses will have them producing beautiful flowers continuously. Faded flowers and dead branches and leaves should be removed regularly. Clip off old blooms and branches every two weeks to help promote new growth.
With these handy tips growing rose in a pot or container will not be too difficult.
Ideal Ground to Grow Roses
Summary: Those who want to grow plants have various questions about the type of plant, weather, soil types, etc. Here is some information to help people grow roses.
Those who have just decided to grow roses have various questions that they want answered. Roses are woody perennials in the Rosaceae family. They come in more than a 100 different varieties. They are very hardy plants and can come in the form of shrubs, bushes, creepers, etc. The size of these plants can be from compact miniatures to those measuring 7 meters tall.
When you decide to grow roses, there are many things to take into consideration. The type of rose will determine the size of the plant. If you do decide to grow your roses in a container, choose one that is best suited for that size of plant you want to grow. If it grows to less than 4 feet tall, the container should be 14-16 inches in diameter and depth, and if the plant grows to 5 feet or more, the container’s depth should be 16-18 inches. The best option is to grow roses directly on the ground.
Growing your roses directly in the soil allows them to gain all the extra nutrients they may require directly from the soil. They also require half the manure and watering required by roses in containers. Roses flourish in rich, loamy, and well-drained soil with a pH level of 5.5 to 7.0. The addition of organic matter to any type of soil is always beneficial. It helps improve the nutrient content of the soil and reduces the risks involved with chemical fertilizers. Organic manure is mainly compost, leaf mold, peat moss, etc. It is the ideal addition to your rose bed. Remember to mix it thoroughly into the soil.
If you are planting the roses in an existing rose bed, ensure fresh organic manure has been added. Remove any dead plant material or portions of the old stock. When digging the soil for planting, ensure that the soil is turned over or ‘tilled.’ The soil, which was at the bottom, should be moved to the upper layers. This ensures soil ‘rotation.’ The base layer should be soil with proper drainage and the next layer should be the tilled soil. Next organic manure, which is mixed with soil, should be added. Then a layer or two of soil, then the soil mixed with manure and so forth.
Remember when you grow roses to never place the plant in raw manure (manure that is not mixed with soil) directly. This may burn the rose roots. While there are many chemical fertilizers available in the market, which will produce excellent results, organic manure is much safer not only to the plant but to the soil it is growing in as well. When you grow roses, ensure that the soil’s pH level is adequate. If the soil is acidic it can be adjusted with dolomitic limestone or with soil sulfur. The local nursery will have the information about the amount to be used and they can test a sample of your garden soil to tell you its pH level.

Rose Propagation
Rose Propagation: Tips and Techniques
Summary: Rose propagation is used by a gardener to make more plants off a single rose plant. There are various techniques of propagation.
Rose propagation has been performed for years by people all over the world. For some it is a hobby while for others, especially nursery owners, it is one of the processes in their business.
There are many methods of rose propagation. The most common methods are budding/grafting, division and layering, using cuttings and in some cases with seeds. Of all the methods used for propagation, the most popular is cutting and division. Rose plants are very handy and their cuttings can catch root in almost all climates and soil types. However, it is suggested to plant cuttings during the cold months, but before the extreme cold weather sets in.
The best cutting is from a stem that has had flowers. The length should be 7 inches and should be cut at a 45-degree angle. The lower half of the stem should have its leaves removed. You must ensure that it does not dry out and is not exposed to extreme temperatures. Though not mandatory, you could dip the base into a rooting hormone. You should plant the cutting in light soil with minimum manure, regularly water it, and not expose it to direct sunlight.
Another method of rose propagation is grafting which is used for the creation of new varieties. Here two living portions of two separate plants are joined to create a permanent union. The plant with roots is called the ‘stock’ and the other is called ‘scion.’ The scion usually has buds on it. You must make a downward slanting cut into the bottom section of the scion behind a bud exposing the cambium (bark layer). Do the same to the upper surface of the stock ensuring that the cut surfaces match. Then carefully but firmly bind them and plant and water as usual.
A longer and more uncertain method of rose propagation is through seeding. It is the only method of improving current varieties. When the rose fades and the petals fall, the base swells and changes color to orange or yellow. These are called hips or heps and are the seedpods for roses. For proper rose germination, breeders simulate winter by putting the seeds for 6-10 weeks in the refrigerator. They are then planted in peat-based soil and they grow for 2-3 months. After 6 weeks or so, buds will begin to appear.
Some tips for better rose propagation,
· The best time for propagation is later fall or spring when temperatures are not too high. Ensure the soil is well drained without over-fertilizing.
· When choosing a cutting, ensure it has two leaves and signs of growth but no flower buds.
· Ensure the cutting does not get direct sunlight. When watering the plant, ensure the soil is moist but don’t over water it.
It is said that those with ‘green thumbs’ always succeed at rose propagation. However, if a person is aware of the plant’s life cycle, growth habits, the soil and weather, etc., that person can identify which method of propagation is best suited for that plant leading to a successful propagation.

Bush Roses
How And When To Prune Bush Roses
Summary: Bush roses will grow prolifically if you keep pruning regularly at the right time and in the right manner, otherwise the plant will grow to be ugly and unruly. However, keep in mind that you do not do it too early while it is still winter because the cold will damage the new buds.
Bush roses – they look beautiful in a garden. You must have seen them in professionally maintained garden and if you have a green thumb with a flair for growing roses, then you too must be wishing your garden had such beautiful flowers. Have you ever wondered what it takes to keep a rose bush perfectly shaped and with just the right amount of flowers? The answer is pruning. If you are visualizing a gardener with a giant pair of shears hacking away, that is trimming, not pruning. Pruning has to be done in a specific manner at a specific time
Bush roses will look good in your garden if they grow on a nicely shaped bush and for that, the bushes need to be pruned because the plant will grow unruly and ugly otherwise. Roses and rose bushes are all about aesthetics. Roses are not grown for food, if they don’t look good, there is no point in growing them. If rose bushes are not trimmed, they will grow long and unruly with big straggly woody stalks and bare base. And another reason is that the stems will stop bearing flowers after a few years. The output of flowers will not be as prolific as you want. With regular pruning, you will encourage the growth of fresh buds whilst maintaining the plant size to be small and manageable.
Bush roses grow out of buds and proper pruning will encourage the growth. Pruning should be done in early spring, as early as possible, just after the end of winter. Any specific reason for this selecting this particular time? Yes. You see, this is the time when buds grow. And if you prune the plant just before spring, it will encourage the growth of the buds. You should only prune if there is an indication that the weather will only get warmer after this point.
Bush roses will grow voluminously if you prune them in the right manner. And what is the right manner? Well, you have to get the right implements first. Get yourself some clean sharp blades and wear think gloves to protect your hands against the thorns. Make the cut right above the bud, a 45 degree diagonal cut with the cut facing inwards towards the plant. The lower edge of the cut should be still above the bud. And do over-prune as this will lead to too much uncontrollable growth.

Rose Plant
Rose Plant Propagation Techniques
Summary: Rose plant propagation is the commercial method of increasing the yield of the plant manifolds. There are various methods of propagation. The methods range from traditional methods of propagation to micro propagation that is conventionally an improved avatar of the conventional methods.
Rose plants are the kings of flowers in the floral market. This demand of roses, adds a huge commercial value to the plant. For this fact, various conventional and scientific methods have been formulated in order to increase the yield of this plant manifolds, so that huge and hybrid qualities can avail all the needs of rose plant in the markets. The various propagation methods are given here.
Cutting- This is one of the oldest methods of rose plant propagation. Many hobbyists use this method to increase the yield of their garden roses. This method is also used commercially due to its simplicity. Always prefer to use a youthful plant for the purpose of cutting. Cut 3 or 4 stems to play safe and make sure that the stems you cut, contains some leaves and buds. Cut the stems at an angle of 45 degrees form top and bottom and immediately dip it in water. After that, you can insert the stems in a fertile pot.
It is always better to dip the basal end of your cuttings in the solution of dry powder rooting hormone. This will pace up the rooting process. Always make sure that once you sow your cuttings in a pot, prepare a greenhouse for them, to ensure the desired results.
Total immerse method- Sometimes, instead of dipping the ends of the cutting, the complete cutting is carefully dipped in a fresh solution for a few seconds. After this, they are immediately planted in a pot. However, the cutting in the pot is watered only after it completely dries off.
Budding- This method of rose plant propagation is used to produce various blends of shades and even to produce multicolored roses. You can choose a wild rose plant and remove its buds. In the place of original buds, tape the bud of a plant whose shade you want, with the wild rose plant. In case you want to produce a multicolored rose, use different buds from different shades rose plants and tape them all individually on a single wild rose. The resultant will be a multicolored rose, depicting the colors of all the buds used initially.
Air layering- This is a comparatively newer method of rose plant propagation. You need to wound a stem while it is on the stock plant. Once wounded you need to aid the wounded part on the stem and then cover it. Soon afterwards, roots start coming out from the wounded region and then you can remove the stem out from the stock plant to let it grow as an independent rose plant.
Apart from the above-mentioned methods, there are a few other methods like micro propagation, transplanting techniques, etc.

As the weather gets hotter, the fertilizer will break down and supply nutrients to the plants. And the quantity also has to right and you need to take advice from someone experienced on this, as this can vary depending on the size of the plant.
To fertilize roses, there are many formulations. But there are a few popular recipes that seem to work better than others, although results may vary based on type of plant and soil conditions. One well known recipe involves – a portion of cottonseed meal, a portion of bone meal, half a portion of fish meal, half a portion of blood meal, half a cup of epsom salts. Otherwise, you can also buy fertilizers off the shelf. Which is the best one to buy? Refer blogs to get an insight.
Or, to fertilize roses properly, you can pick a fertilizer based on the results you get from a soil test. A soil test will tell you what nutrients are deficient in your soil. A soil test won’t cost that much, less than ten dollars. Get it done and this will narrow down your options. You need to take a soil sample and send it to the testing center. Take the sample as per the instructions. The soil test must be done regularly, like once every year or so. As for the actual application of the fertilizer, spread out a layer around the plant, about one inch away from the stem. Use an implement to turn the soil and mix it before you water.

Tea Roses
Exquisite Tea Roses
Arguably, roses, which symbolize love, sympathy and friendship, are the favourite of flower lovers the world over. Being fragile and disease-prone, planting roses is not an easy task even for the most seasoned gardening enthusiasts.
Despite being fragile and vulnerable to diseases, roses in general will grow in any type of climate. However, cold weather may not be conducive for the growth of certain variety of roses. For instance, tea roses grow better in warmer weather. Hence, it is wise to plant roses that are suitable to weather conditions, because planting anything else would be a futile exercise, as they may not survive in a naturally hostile condition.
Tea roses come in just about every imaginable colour. These exquisite blooms require a lot of tender treatment and attention than other plants. However, it pays to take care of them, as they give you the perfectly formed, long-stemmed flowers, which would definitely add to the appeal of a bouquet.
There are several factors that need to be considered while planting tea roses. Provide sufficient space around the bushes, so that the plants get enough air and sunlight. Tea roses require rich soil and frequent use of manure vis-à-vis other plants.
The ideal time for pruning tea roses would be early spring. Get rid of dead or diseased stem and dry foliage. When pruning these roses, remember to make the cut just above an outward facing bud. This will help dormant buds to develop into new branches.
Sprinkle the granulated food at the base of the plant, but let it not touch the plant. It would be necessary to fertilize the plants towards mid-summer. Sufficient amount of fertilizer and good care can result in fabulous blooms. Hence, mulch the tea rose bed, with cocoa or buckwheat hulls. Mulching is good for roses, as it protects the plants from fungal or other related diseases. A powerful spray of water can wash away most of the insects. But if it is found to be ineffective, you may use an anti-fungal product to protect the plant from insects and diseases.
It is advisable to remove faded blooms promptly, cutting them below the next set of leaves, above an outward-facing bud. Cut back the canes to about two-thirds when the colour of the leaves begin to change and droop.
Planting tea roses would be greatly rewarding. If you want to prepare bouquets, tea roses would be ideal, as they do not fall apart at the petals, unlike some varieties, when they are cut.
Summary: Tea roses, unlike other variety of roses, are the favourite of many gardening enthusiasts as they are not only very attractive, but also are perfect for making bouquets.

Hybrid Tea Roses
Hybrid Tea Roses: Classic Beauty
A cross between hybrid perpetual and old-fashioned tea produce the acclaimed and popular hybrid tea roses. Hybrid tea roses are known for their beauty, fragrance and appeal. Usually, this variety of rose produces only one bloom at the end of the stem.
Depending on the variety and climatic conditions, hybrid tea roses measure around five inches across comprising about 60 petals, with plants growing 4-6 feet tall. These blooms are especially suitable for making bouquets due to their long and strong stems and availability in several colours.
Hybrid tea roses require some extraordinary care unlike other varieties. Hence, it is advisable to choose a specific variety of rose based on climatic conditions. If you have received the rose plant with bare root, unpack and soak it in water for at least two hours. You need loosen the soil where you want to plant it. The plant can grow better in soil rich in organic matter.
Dig a hole sufficiently big for the plant to spread its roots, and make a mound around it. These hybrid tea roses are bud grafted and hence the bud union should be around two inches above the soil. But the bud union should be buried around two inches in soil in cold climatic conditions. After filling the hole, water the plant well to remove any possible air pockets.
Being repeat bloomers, hybrid tea roses benefit more from frequent application of manure. Choose a balanced fertilizer and continue feeding every alternate week. These roses require slight acidic soil in the range of 6-6.5 pH. If the plant does not get proper iron, its leaves turn yellowish. Magnesium sulphate is used to increase the colour of flowers and strengthen its stems.
During summer and hot weather hybrid tea roses would require a lot of water. Water the rose bed every week or as frequently to avoid dry soil. It is a good idea to add mulch around the plants, as it would prevent weeds as well as help retain moisture.
On an average, the hybrid tea rose attains its full growth in three years. Like modern rose plants, hybrid rose plants have a lifespan of around seven years. All rose plants require about five hours of sunlight for their healthy growth; the sunlight also help dry up excess moisture and protect the plants from diseases and insects.
Summary: Known for their elegance, hybrid tea roses are loved for their extraordinary blooms, which are frequently used in making bouquets and landscaping.

Thornless roses allow gardeners to garden without having to do much pruning and cutting around. Gardeners may otherwise shun roses as they can be difficult to maintain due to their thorny nature. However, with thornless variants – gardeners can easily handle roses and not get cut in the process of handling them. So too there is a significant benefit for customers as they do not have to feel the prick of thorns each time they handle a rose. This is especially useful for people with skin conditions that are provoked by broken skin caused by something as tiny as the prick of a thorn – and these people can now handle a rose as freely as a normal person.
Some thornless roses however are not entirely thornless and are only almost so – this depends on the quality of the rose in question. In all such ‘almost thornless’ variants the thorns are often not found on the stem but are to be found under the flower itself – which makes it easy to avoid. These roses come in many variants each with their different quality standards – which are discussed below.
The Smooth Buttercup Thornless variant was bred in 1962 and is prolific in its growth – thus making it particularly easy to garden and grow. It is a floribunda and is also colorful. Commonly known as the Hippolyte, the Gallica thornless roses are bred to be grown in colder, northern climates and this variant of the plant is very tall in height. While it is small in size, it is a prolific grower and will produce large clusters of flowers. The Zepherine Drouhlin is a bourbon rose and is a rose which requires very high maintenance. While its color and fragrance is much prized, it will require much attention with regard to its air circulation and also the quality of soil it is grown in. The Banksias variant is a yellow rose and is also much sought after. It is not just the color, but also the size. Thornless roses are available in both tall and miniature variants and can be customized to the customer and grower’s liking.

Floribunda Roses
Designs On Floribunda Roses
Roses have been the most favorite among flowers from time immemorial. Even the greatest of the bards was inspired to write, “That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.” Garden enthusiasts across the globe plant roses to beautify their landscape. To the uninitiated planting roses would seem a bit of a daunting task. But what they need to know is the difference between the most popular types of roses: hybrid tea and floribunda roses.
Some horticulturists consider the Floribunda a better variety, mainly due to its capacity to continue producing flowers for a long period. They are grown more for displaying the flowers than for sale or other purposes. Floribunda roses add elegance to the landscape, as they produce flowers in a range of colors.
Traditional designs of flower arrangements emphasize the aesthetic qualities of color, form and texture. What matters most are the smooth transition and harmonious relationship. The three classifications of traditional designs are line, line-mass and Mass.
Line design: Adopted from the Oriental Line designs, the linear pattern is dominant in the line design. Usually, they are inspired by natural forms like the lines of a tree branch. The design incorporates materials in a realistic manner for a scenic interpretation, where flowers and foliage are pruned to emphasize natural characteristics.
Line-mass design: In this arrangement, merging of some of the best qualities of the Oriental Line and Occidental Mass done to produce an open silhouette. A line-mass design is similar to a mass design, with the predominance of the linear quality. In order to draw attention, the materials are arranged to match the prominent characteristics of flowers.
Mass design: A large amount of plant materials are used in mass designs. With a closed silhouette, the flowers are arranged in different forms, including oval, circular, fan-shaped or triangular. In this design flowers and foliage are loosely arranged, avoiding crowding of plant materials.
Helpful hints
While arranging floribunda roses or other flowers, it is advisable to maintain the height of the mass design at around one-and-one-half times that of the container’s height. For line or line-mass designs, the longest line should be about 11/2 times the height or diameter of the container. Remember that the container should not dominate the design, but remain merely a design component. Large containers should be avoided, or cover them with some plant material, so that they appears visually smaller. If your container is white, use some white plant material to cover them aesthetically. Remember, the container should always complement the designs.
Summary: Floribunda roses being a favorite variety, floral arrangements are done to suit individual tastes. But following certain traditional floral arrangements can add aesthetic beauty and elegance.
Floribunda Rose: One Flower, Many Blooms
Summary: Ever since it was bred in the Thirties, the Floribunda rose has been ever popular because of its aesthetic value and has set a milestone example in plant cross breeding.
If you are talking about hybrid roses, Floribunda is a name that instantly comes to mind because of its ability to bear multiple blooms. The name derives from Latin, meaning “many flowering”. This particular rose is considered a milestone in plant cross-breeding as it resulted from crossing the Rosa multiflora, polyantha and hybrid tea roses.
The Floribunda rose has been created with the fundamental idea of multiple blooming like poyantha roses and to have the same variety of colors as tea roses do. The famous hybridizer, Dr. J.N. Nicolas, who was an employee of the world famous rose growing company, Jackson & Perkins, first coined this rose’s name in 1909, which was also called “Gruss an Aachen”. These flowers are larger in size and have a similar growth pattern to hybrid teas.
The Floribunda rose shrub is generally stiff and is somewhat smaller than hybrid tea rose shrubs. Since they grow in clusters, these roses are used in large scale decorations of public places and gatherings. The planting of Floribundas should be made in a manner so that they are placed at least a foot and a half apart. Moreover, if you are growing them in colder weather, the planting should be at least two feet apart and also make sure to protect them from the winter freeze.
Warmer climates call for at least three feet of space between two Floribunda rose bushes and other auxiliary precautions for growing them are more or less the same for any other outdoor plant. If you want them to look more beautiful, the best thing to do is to plant them in groups of four or more plants. They also grow well in pots.
When purchasing the Floribunda rose plant, always remember that they should be grafted. Moreover, they should not be planted in places that are exposed to dust, smoke and strong sunlight. Even though they are known for their toughness, strong sunlight can somewhat retard their growth and also kill them. The best time to plant them is between November to April and as bare roots which ought to be trimmed before planting to enhance faster growth. The pruning process is of primary importance in finally deciding how well the plant will grow in future.
Apart from these, the care taken for a Floribunda rose is similar to that of other roses. The early morning dew is helpful in improving their quality as is a dose of bone meal as fertilizer for the soil in which they are being grown.

Garden Roses
How To Care For Garden Roses
Summary: Garden roses, if well maintained can make for a beautiful sight and your garden will be the envy of all who behold it. But to grow and maintain good roses, you need to remember that there are certain practices and procedures you have to follow and if you learn these techniques, you’ll grow some beautiful flowers.
Garden roses – who doesn’t like a garden full of beautiful blooming roses? Among the thousands of species of flowers out there, the rose has endured as a favorite for its timeless beauty and also for its fragrance. Countless lines of poetry have been written about the rose and its thorns. But to get such a garden, you need to know what are the best practices when it comes to growing great roses. Explained here are a few tips that will help you grow some great flowers. Gardening is not impossibly difficult, but it does take patience and experience.
To plant good garden roses, begin at ground level, literally. Make sure you pick a fertile patch of soil and decide what species of rose you want to plant there. How suitable is your soil for the purpose? For this, you will have to conduct a soil test. Actually, you don’t really have to do much, you just have to collect a soil sample as per a certain procedure the local testing center will tell you about and send it out for a test. It costs less than $10 dollars and you will get the results within a couple weeks, a month max.
And good garden roses can be planted only if the soil is ideally fertile. Once you have picked up a species of rose you’d like to plant and have the results of the soil test in your hand, you will have an idea what nutrients are lacking in the soil and this will tell you what kind of fertilizer you need to add and how much of it. If you add too much, it won’t bee good. Add an optimum quantity in the cold season about an inch away from the stem of the plant and turn the soil well. As the season warms up, the fertilizer will break down and release nutrients over the year.
And yes, let us not forget that garden roses need pruning for good roses to grow. There are methods of pruning the bushes. Always prune just before the onset of spring. Just before. If you do it too early, then the new sprouting buds will get damaged in the winter cold. Pruning should be done by making a diagonal cut with the cut facing inwards. Pruning should be done to remove old and dead or drying parts of the plant that are blocking airflow and taking up resources.

Summary: Rose varieties carry their own meanings and significance and it is important to know these as roses have become a common item of courtesy and affection in human relations.
Rose varieties are many and roses come in many different types as well. The most common type of rose varieties is the red rose which has come to symbolize almost all roses. Red is of course, the symbol of love and stands for passion. The shade of red often comes to determine the intensity of the feeling meant to be conveyed by the flower. A deep red symbolizes love in a very intense way. This is true for all crimson and scarlet hues. A brighter than deep red symbolizes a devoted passion and commitment.
Another type of rose varieties that is of the more popular kind is that of the pink rose. Pink roses symbolize youth primarily and can be seen as a younger counterpart of the older red rose. Pink has reduced romantic connotations and symbolizes mainly devotion and care for the individual it is presented to. Orange flowers too represent youthful energy and are devoid of more deep romantic connotations as are seen in the case of red colored roses.
Peach is a kind of rose varieties that has come to symbolize all that is tender in relationships. A peach represents absolute innocence and devoted care. Yellow on the other hand is absolutely the opposite with a very strong cheer component. Yellow is the color of sunshine and is meant to be an absolute dispeller of gloom and melancholy with its brightness. A gift of a yellow rose represents true, unbridled cheer.
Finally, looking through the more obscure kinds of rose varieties we see the blue and green shades of rose. While they are much unconventional, they too have come to symbolize their own particular eccentricities. Blue roses symbolize tranquility. They are the color of the sea and like the sea seem almost eternal and calm despite their ups and downs. Green on the other hand is simple the color of nature and brings together all that something natural does – a verdant, growing beauty. Thus, rose varieties are of many kinds and a particular variety sends out a particular message which must be paid attention to by the person presenting them.

Iceberg Roses
Everything You Need About Pruning and Shaping Iceberg Roses
Summary: Anyone who loves roses would have heard of or seen the iceberg roses and would love them more than any other variety. This is one variety that is much treasured in both the colors that it is available in, pink, and white.
Iceberg roses a floribunda variety, it is not too fussy about the care it needs and can be grown easily enough with a little care and loving. People love to get this variety for their hedges and fences as it is just very appealing and bloom all through the summer without needing any extra care like some other varieties often do. Since this needs very little care and blooms all year long, those who don’t really have green thumbs find it easier to grow this around their place.
With the white varieties of the iceberg roses, the shade of white is almost blinding, which is why they have the name. They have really thin stems however and so aren’t really a favorite with florists who want to make cut flower bouquets. With a trellis or arbor or if you want to pick out some of the easiest to grow varieties for your gazebo, opting for the iceberg roses is a great idea. Since they grow in clusters, you will find it hard to find a space without flowers blooming or buds peeking out. It is a beautiful adornment to have over the arch in your garden or in the outdoors as it grows so beautifully.
Iceberg roses are a variety that are quite resilient but be careful that you don’t grow them during the frost or that you prune them in spring when it’s not cold. When a new cut is exposed to frost, these roses will die out easily. It is important to know when to prune them and with this variety just before winter and during growing season are the best times to cut and trim them for better growth. When you want the roses to grow in to shrubs, you have to cut them differently than when you want them to grow taller.
When you want to focus on length for your iceberg roses, cut back just one third of the oldest growing foliage or bushes. Trim and shape the plant during summers by cutting above the five leaf portions to grow it in the direction you desire. When cutting out dead flowers, make sure you don’t cut off the buds which often grow very close to one another in clusters. If you do hard pruning to keep them growing as shrubs, you will be cutting down on the number of flowers as well in iceberg roses.

Blue Roses
Blue Roses: A Scientific Reality
Summary: Blue roses do not exist naturally in the lap of Mother Nature. However, most of the blue roses that you may have seen sometimes are a dyed form of the pure white rose. 2004 however, saw the advent of pigmented blue roses in the markets that were a scientific creation.
Blue roses have always been symbolized with love and prosperity. However, they do not exist in a natural form. Your mind may contradict this statement, if you have ever seen a blue flower in some botanical garden or a decorative hall. For what you always see may not the complete reality, similar the case with a blue rose. The rose flower that you many have seen somewhere, colored blue, must have been a dyed white flower or a genetically modified master piece.
The lapse of blue roses in the nature have always fetched them the title of mystery and historically they have always been associated with attaining the impossible and even passionate romance. They were sometimes even treated as a symbol of royal blood and love at first sight. The royalty of this rose was always unmatched, even before it existed in the world, for real.
Blue roses have though been created artificially by scientists as well through genetic modification. The reason for the absence of this shade in the nature is the incapability of the nature to produce ‘deep blue’ or ‘real blue’ color producing gene. An ancient book proposes the use of a blue dye that can be supplemented to the roots of the bark and the resultant is said to be a blue rose. However, one of the best-dyed blue rose is the ‘Blue moon’, which is more towards a lilac color.
To serve the needful, a thirteen long years of effort of an Australian research company and a Japanese research company collaboratively, formulated a genetically modified blue rose, which had hit the markets. These genetically engineered blue roses however, could not produce the true blue color initially, due to the presence of the original cyanidin pigment, which produced a darker color than the actual blue color. The recent RNAi technology however, has been able to depress the presence of this pigment to some extent, making it possible to produce mauve colored roses.
The various scientific efforts to produce blue roses have also produced some of the best and unusual blends of colors. However, the thirteen years long research and modifications have produced almost blue colored roses that were displayed publicly for the first time in a flower expo held at Tokyo, for the first time in October 2008.
The exquisite and royal look of these blue roses, fetch much more demand for them, than any other shade of roses. They are always in a high demand for decorative arrangements.

Pruning Roses
Pruning Roses In A Mediterranean Climate
Summary: Mild winters are the essence of a Mediterranean climate that makes the pruning process for roses a lot different from what we usually see in temperature and continental climate areas. Pruning roses involves a careful choice of when and how to prune the plant in Mediterranean climate.
Rose pruning is a term not unknown to the people who have been serving commercial or hobbyist rose culturing for long. Pruning roses is of a great importance, in order to ensure a better quality and yield of your rose plant, for a long time to come. This art scribbles the destiny of your roses, as it is responsible for truncating the old growth, in order to pave way for the new babyish and fresh plant, which blossoms. It is also a parameter, which decides the quality of your plant i.e, how dense and large the petals would be.
Having known the importance of pruning roses, you need to know one thing that pruning totally depends on the type of climate in which the rose plant is being grown. For the Mediterranean climate, alike any other climate, two things are of an utmost importance, i.e, when to prune and how to prune.
When: Mild winters are the USP of Mediterranean climate. You need to know that pruning roses in extreme winters results in a stunted growth. Extreme cold is a clear indication of frost that forms the root cause of bacterial and fungal infections in the plant. Thus, you should choose that patch of the climate, which blends warm climatic spells with pruning. A margin of 6 weeks from when frost is expected is the best for pruning roses. This results in a lavishing yield and ensures quality as well, because the old growth is finished off by the frost that follows the warm spells in the Mediterranean climate.
How: In the Mediterranean climate, you need not to prune the roses hard into the ground. A lesser amount of pruning roses is enough to ensure yield and quality both, as stress is generally given to the bud regions that are the slot for young branches to flourish later.
However, for the rose flowers which are not native to the Mediterranean climate, but the continental climate, should not be pruned immediately before or after the winters. This is because pruning roses of this type, anywhere close to winters, destroys all the buds. This makes the plant non-flowering. Pruning is preferred only after the last season’s flowers have completely wilted off, in the continental climate type roses.
With this much information about pruning roses, you know enough to ensure that your flower blooms and harness big petals that are young and fresh, while ensuring a greater yield at the same time, as well.
Roses and Pruning: Cut above the Rest
A recent scientific research has suggested that people who take to gardening live a comparatively healthier and happier life. In the light of this study, it would be a good idea to grow roses in your backyard. But there are a few things to learn when it comes to growing roses. Roses and pruning are almost inseparable, given the fact that without pruning the plants would produce less number of flowers, stunting their growth. Pruning is necessary in warmer weather conditions, as they induce dormancy in rose plants.
The reason behind pruning is to help the plant to produce new shoots. As you become familiar with rose cultivation, you will learn to prune better and grow healthy and floriferous plants. The other chief reasons for pruning include removal of dead-wood, improvement in air circulation and provide the plant to grow healthier.
When should rose plants be pruned? It is largely determined by type of rose plant and the ground on which it is cultivated. Mostly, roses are pruned during spring, when leaf buds begin to swell and become reddish. Roses and pruning go hand in hand, especially for hybrid roses that need extra care.
Pruning helps roses redirect their growth. When parts of the plants are pruned, they produce new stems and leaves. Hence, all pruning cuts should be made above a new bud. Generally, a rose stem grows and bears flowers for several years. But they do not grow in size like other plants, but after a period of growth they die. Rose plants when not pruned may die for lack of light and air, and hence pruning is necessary to keep the plant growing unhindered.
The basic skills required for the art of roses and pruning can be acquired by studying gardening techniques. Pruning would require the usage of clean and sharp tools. A good place to start pruning would be at the bottom of the plant. Prune it and open up the centre of the plant to allow sufficient light and air. All cuts should be made at a 45-degree angle at roughly ¼ inch above the bud, assuring they are not ragged. Get rid of broken, dead-wood or diseased parts such as dry and shriveled stems. It is good to cut off weak and thin branches.
What are the types of pruning? Basically, there are three methods of pruning. In hard pruning, rose stems are cut off by 4-5 inches. This is method is usually used for newly planted roses. Hard pruning is done for building up strong roots and stimulating the plants to produce strong stems. The second method is called moderate pruning, which involves cutting the stems by roughly half of their length. This method is recommended for hybrid rose plants. In the third method, easy-care, the plant is cut in half straight across for better growth.
Summary: Roses and pruning are inseparable given the fact that the plants require sufficient air and light unlike other plants for producing flowers and unhindered growth.
The Right Way Method Of Rose Pruning
Summary: When it comes to rose pruning, there is a right time and a right way to go about it. Pruning too early or too late might not result in the kind of progress you want to see as there are a lot of factors to keep in mind and specific species of roses need to be trimmed differently.
Rose pruning must be done at periodic intervals and it is an important step in ensuring that your plants grow well and look healthy, strong and good looking. The latter quality is important because roses are all about aesthetics. But there is a correct way, a right procedure to prune the plants. If not pruned properly the roses might not bloom the next season. Or even if they do, there might not be as many as you wanted, output will not be prolific. So if you want roses to grow healthy, prune them right.
Rose pruning involves removing the old and diseased parts of the plant to make way for healthier growth. The plant may be damaged for any number of reasons. Frost and insects can cause damage. Remove the dead part to make way for new growth and also to improve air flow around the plant. Remove the old to make way for the new. But not all roses should be pruned. Some roses should not be pruned in spring, roses like gallicas, moss roses, damasks and albas. Hey should be pruned after blooming to remove diseased canes. Cut out the unwanted parts and make room for air flow. Likewise, there are different ways to approach different plant species. You need to do some research regarding the specific pruning methods for each species.
But with rose pruning, there are some specific methods that hold good for every plant. The general rule is, that you have to make a diagonal cut, as close to 45 degrees as possible. It should be made about a quarter of an inch above a bud that is facing outwards. And the cut should be facing towards the inside of the plant. And get rid of all dead wood that has been damaged by winter or for whatever reason. Canes larger than half an inch in diameter had also better be removed. These unnecessarily use resources and should be done away with.
A good time for rose pruning is when they are done blooming as this will allow new growth before the onset of the cold season. Perpetuals should be pruned at the end of winter, overlapping sometimes into the beginning if spring as this is the time when new buds develop. If you prune too early, the roses will develop new sprouts at the wrong time, while it is still cold in winter and these buds will get damaged.

Shrub Roses
Benefits Of Growing Shrub Roses
Summary: Shrub roses are one of the many varieties of roses and the most common one found all over the world. They are more common since they are easier to maintain compared to other roses.
Shrub roses are among the most commonly found rose plants in the world. Roses being the most favorite flower of many, a shrub rose thus becomes a favorite too. They are available in many varieties themselves and in many colors. However, the basic features of a shrub rose remains the same. They all have a pleasant fragrance. Most shrub rose plants are slightly tall and bushy with flowers blooming on top of the bush. Shrub itself means a bush. Roses bloom in many numbers at once and are mostly round and small. When not in bloom or before the season, these shrubs look good without the flowers too as they make good hedges.
Roses have been among the favorite flowers for many years and yet people always dreaded planting one in their garden. Growing rose plants does require additional care when compared to growing other flowers but this definitely does not mean you should stay away from having them in your own garden. For people who are confused about planning a rose plant but are not sure if they can dedicate much time and attention in its growth, shrub roses are the perfect choice. These roses are easier to grow and maintain among the other benefits it offers.
Once planted, shrub roses survive better in extreme weather conditions compared to other roses, say hybrid tea roses. They can withstand an extremely cold day or a very hot day. Even if the flowers wither away in real extreme weather conditions, they quickly bloom again. As a matter of fact, these roses have many repeat blooms throughout the season from late spring to well into autumn. They also have the resistance to diseases, that is they are not prone to be affected by most diseases. Other roses need regular pruning and watering among other care such as fertilizers etc. Comparatively, shrub roses require less care and upkeep making it a favorite rose plant to grow.
Apart from the above benefits, shrub roses are better than other roses in many other ways. When in full bloom, it becomes extremely peaceful to look at them. When not in bloom, they can act as good hedges for your home. Most people thus plant these shrubs as a boundary surrounding their home. When these shrubs become hedges, they also protect your garden and home. They do not grow taller than four feet making it easier to maintain. All these factors proves that growing a shrub rose is easier and more beneficial than other roses.

Mulch
What is Mulch? What does it do?
Summary: Mulchhas been used for years in gardens. It offers the best defense for plants such as roses and daffodils.
Over the years, one method of caring for your garden is through the use of mulch. It has been used by various gardeners over the years and they have been found to not only help with the health of your plants but also enhance the appearance of your garden to create the effect of a forest floor.
Using mulchserves various purposes. It is basically made up of decomposing organic material such as leaves, grass, wood and bark chips, etc. and those are the best for your roses. The material is layered around the plant stem over the soil and provides protection to the base of the plant. They provide an extra layer of protection for the roses below the soil. There are different types which suit different environments and soil types. It is best to do your research before choosing one type. There are two types of mulch available. There are the organic and the inorganic variety. The organic variety includes grass clippings, which are the cheapest variety, (though they tend to decay quickly), wood or bark chips which are slow to decay, compost, (though raw compost tends to burn roses), peat moss which is quite versatile but must be kept moist always, sawdust though it should be aged for about a year before using, etc. The inorganic variety includes shredded rubber and landscape fabric, this is just a sheet of plastic which is placed over the soil and slits are cut through which the plant can grow. Neither provides any nutrition to the soil or plant.
There are various benefits of using mulch. Not only does it lend an aesthetic appeal to your garden, but it also helps protect it from various environmental changes. If used properly it provides greater protection from weather changes. It helps maintain soil temperature by keeping the soil from heating up in the summer and trapping warmth during winters keeping your roses safe the whole year through. As it is layered over the top soil, it prevents soil erosion. It prevents the germination of weeds by inhibiting their growth. Depending upon the type used, it can provide extra nutrition to your plants as it decays. Before applying mulch to your roses thoroughly weed the area. Spread the material over the entire area. Keep it a few inches away from the plant stems to prevent decay due to wet mulch. Preferably use sawdust for roses. A minimum quantity would be a 2 inch thick layer with 5 inches being the maximum.

Put the rose bush container in a location that has adequate sunlight for six hours and some shade thereafter. Take extra care when moving the receptacle in order not to discharge the water. If you have placed it in its location, water it again lightly for at least a couple of weeks until you’ve seen signs that the rose has adjusted to its new environment. Every person desiring to spruce up their gardens can effectively do so if a person were to plant roses, more or less the most popular and beautiful flower in the world. Then again, everything is easier said than done, and this goes for planting roses as well. What makes planting roses even more difficult for other people is that there are many different ways of planting these wonderful flowers based on the climate and temperature a person is currently living in. However, these various techniques if heeded will make the roses, which last longer than other flowers, continue to grow.
If a person wants to plant roses in an area that is generally considered as cold or wintry, the first vital step he/ she needs to take is to plant the rose bush in a deeper hole in order to shelter it from the harmful cold weather. Keeping the quality of these roses in tip top shape is a much longer process, and it will require diligent effort. Whenever winter sets in, the roses go into a sort of hibernation, and the gardener needs to constantly take care of these roses in order for them to be ready for spring.
When one is to plant roses in his/ her garden, the rule of thumb is to continually feed them with fertilizer. Conversely, when winter is on the horizon, the garden should stop feeding the roses the fertilizer for the reason that it is necessary that a rose stops growing when it goes into hibernation, or else it will die. However, feeding roses super phosphate just before cold weather sets in will help fully strengthen the plant. Another rule of thumb technique that a gardener should not forget is to always prune the rose bushes once the winter has set in.
To plant roses and to keep them in good quality when the cold sets in, one of the most effective techniques is to start mounding and mulching the roses in preparation for their hibernation. Mounding or mulching consists of building up mounds of soil around the base of the roses that reach up to six to eight inches; this will protect the roses from the cold and to make them have comfortable winter hibernation until summer. Also, when one is to plant roses near winter, one should never forget to water the rose bushes before it takes its deep sleep.
Living Conditions Affect Choosing What Roses To Plant
Summary: The soil, spacing, irrigation, and sunlight are four essential factors in the deciding of what roses to plant. Without any information of these four things, one will be at sea concerning the planting of roses, and may end up disappointed in his/ her wannabe attempts at being a gardener.
Like any other plant, a beautiful rose’s growth depends on different variables, which can comprise of climate, soil, the amount of sunlight, and even the consideration of the look of the personal garden; this is why it is absolutely important for a person who desires to grow these wonderful flowers to choose the correct roses to plant based on the living conditions he/ she is continually living under. A potential gardener looking for roses to plant must be able to know the exact specifications of the living conditions in order to see if these conditions are good for the rose.
There are four basic elements that are crucial for the gardener to thoroughly know, for the reason that it is because of these various elements that a decision on what roses to plant will eventually be settled. The four elements include: soil, spacing, irrigation, and sunlight. A rose will only grow in tip top quality if the soil that it is planted in has an average soil PH from 6.5 to 6.8. In addition to this, a rose can grow even better if the soil has good drainage, meaning that the rose will not drown from any flooding or over-watering.
If a person’s garden is already cramped, with just a tiny amount of space that could possibly be for the rose bush, then it is unwise to start choosing what roses to plant because it is essential that roses have a lot of space, more than other types of plants, in order to breathe, or else the roses may acquire varying types of deficiencies. Besides soil and spacing, a gardener must realize that he/ she needs to take responsibility in the watering or irrigation of the plant – two deep waterings per week sounds simple but it is time consuming.
The last element that a potential gardener must fully have knowledge of before he/she picks what roses to plant is the amount of sunlight that reaches to the plants in the garden. The majority of roses prefer six hours of a cool morning sun than that of a scorching afternoon sun, so one must be in constant awareness of how much sun the roses are getting,is it too much or too little? When all the information on the four essential elements is completed, then one can get advice from an experienced horticulturist on what roses to get.

It is necessary to water the climbing rose bush daily for a month, taking care to direct the water to soak its roots. According to gardening enthusiasts, it is good to water rose plants in the morning. When new growth is seen on the rose, it is advisable to reduce amount of watering.
Secure the rose canes by tying them lightly by a flexible cord or twine, but avoid tying them tightly, as it can cause damage to the plants. Prune the faded blooms and leaves around the base of the climbing rose bush. Extra care should be taken to keep the plant free of disease-causing insects.
You can allow the climbing rose bush to grow freely for the initial few years. Once the plant attains its full growth, prune the canes and the plant’s base. As structural canes continue to grow, tie them lightly to the trellis.
